The 'Other' option
Let someone pick an answer you didn't think of, and type it in themselves.
However carefully you write a list of choices, someone on site will meet the one you left off. Turn on Other and your Multiple Choice field grows an extra option with a text box beside it - what they type is saved as the answer, exactly as if it had been on your list all along.
Turning it on
On a Multiple Choice field, tick Include an ‘Other (please specify)’ option.
That is the whole setting. The option is always labelled Other, always sits last in the list, and its box always prompts Please specify - none of that is configurable, so there is nothing else to fill in.
It is off by default, so every form you already have keeps behaving exactly as it does now until you opt one in.
What the team member sees
The box appears only while Other is the selected answer, and disappears again if they change their mind:
Wine type
○ Red Wine
○ White Wine
○ Juice
● Other [ Rosé_____________ ]
What gets saved
Whatever they type replaces “Other” in the answer. So the example above saves as:
Wine type: Rosé
Not Other, and not Other: Rosé. That is the point of the feature - the report reads as
though Rosé had been one of your options, rather than making whoever reads it decode a
two-part answer.
If someone picks Other and leaves the box empty, the answer saves as Other. It is never rejected, even on a compulsory field, because picking Other is a real answer - they have told you none of your choices fit.
It does not add a column
An Other answer is still one answer in one field. A Data Table built from these forms has exactly the same columns it had before, and the typed text appears in the same column as every other answer to that question.
That is worth knowing if you are comparing responses across jobs: you will see the real values people typed, mixed in with the ones you offered, rather than a column full of “Other” and a second column to cross-reference.
Tips
- Read your Other answers occasionally. They are the list telling you what it is missing. A value that keeps coming up is usually one worth adding as a proper option.
- Turning Other back off leaves existing answers alone - they were saved as plain text, so they stay readable whatever you do to the field afterwards.
